Business Aspect was engaged by the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries to deliver its new online web portal – the QFish Public Portal. QFish has enabled the Department to meet an increasing expectation from multiple parties, including the public, to gain access to timely and authoritative data held by the department including commercial and recreational fishing activities, aquaculture production, mapped at various spatial resolutions.

The Department is responsible for ensuring the sustainability of fish stocks, and supporting enjoyable recreational fishing and a profitable commercial fishing sector within Queensland. To enable this, Fisheries Queensland collects detailed data on fishing activities within Queensland.

Business Aspect was engaged by the Department to prepare the requirements, design and build the QFish solution, which now allows online access to the latest statistics on recreational and commercial fishing and aquaculture production.

Fisheries Queensland Manager, Dr Ross Quinn said that QFish accesses and collates all different types of data together in a user-friendly format.

“With the help from Business Aspect we are able to provide a portal that delivers open, transparent data to the community in response to their key interests,” Dr Quinn said.

“With more than 640,000 recreational fishers and 1500 licensed commercial fishing boats, Queensland is a state of fishing enthusiasts.

“Access to current, region-specific data on fishing will enable users to become more familiar with trends in their area, whether for their personal enjoyment or business,” he said.

The QFish Public Portal offers a range of functions including increased search optimisation in the form of interactive mapping and interactive data cubes which optimise searches, as well as customised search functions. The solution has enabled the Department to support recreational and commercial fishers and enthusiasts, providing greater access to information and support for Compliance.

Business Aspect has worked with Queensland Fisheries since 2005 and has designed, developed and continues to support and maintain a portfolio of applications for commercial fishing.
